Arts and Culture

Expand your horizons and be inspired by contemporary and classic arts and culture in Maitland.

Day one

There really is no substitute for good taste, and you are sure to get that at The Cunning Culinarian. The ambient space invites you to enjoy an exquisite lunch, made fresh, with passion and love. After lunch head over to the Maitland Regional Art Gallery and peruse the compelling and inspiring exhibitions. Each year the gallery showcases thousands of artworks and creates hundreds of learning activities across 25 exhibitions. As well as being one of the city’s biggest visitor drawcards, Maitland Regional Art Gallery is a favourite amongst locals. Be sure to stop off and admire the independent galleries, The Levee Art Gallery and Studio as well as Studio Amsterdam on your way through to The Levee, where you should grab an afternoon coffee, do some shopping and have a wander along the Riverwalk.

Take a break and unwind by checking into your accommodation. Fratelli Roma is an easy walk from the Quest Apartments. Along the way, you’ll pass an array of bars, such as The Pourhouse, RAMA Bar and The Rigby to enjoy pre dinner or post dinner drinks. At Fratelli Roma, you’ll have a hard task choosing from either the fresh, daily homemade pasta or gnocchi, amongst other robust flavoured, authentic Italian dishes for a fine dining experience.

Day two

Make your way to Morpeth for a leisurely morning. Enjoy breakfast at Savannah on Swan, but you’ll need to be there early to secure a table with a view. Spend your morning wandering the cobblestoned laneways and weave in and out of the shops. Take yourself further afield from the main shopping fare and go on the Morpeth Historic Walk. Learn about the once thriving river port and the characters and events which shaped the town we see today. The Morpeth Museum is also one to stop off at, with interesting collections and exhibitions on the town’s history.

Schedule a stop for lunch at the Heritage Gardens Nursery Cafe. Enjoy your lunch, a coffee and indulge in a piece of cake, nestled amongst the greenery. Next stop, Maitland Gaol. Explore the 150 year old establishment on a self-guided tour and learn about the conditions of life behind bars. Discover some of the most hardened and notorious criminals that were housed there. Upon completion of your tour, head on back to your accommodation to freshen up. When ready, head to COQUUN for dinner, Savour the distinct native flavours at this refined cafe, small bar and bistro, positioned in the award-winning Riverlink Building, with a fitting outlook over the Hunter River. After a blissful nights sleep, take an easy stroll to The Rigby for breakfast and coffee before bidding Maitland farewell till next time.
